How to measure your bed

Width Length Headboard
  1. Measure inside the frame, where the mattress sits: from one inner edge to the other, not across the wood.
  2. Width is side to side, length is from the headboard to the foot. Use centimetres if you can.
  3. Pick the size that matches, or up to a few cm smaller. Not listed? Choose “Other size…” and type what you measured.

Not sure? Send us a photo on WhatsApp with the tape measure on the frame and we will tell you which size fits.

How to choose a mattress

1. Measure your bed. Measure the inside of the frame. Most double beds in Kigali take 140 × 190 cm (about 4½ × 6 ft); a single takes 90 × 190 cm. The size guide shows every size side by side.

2. Pick a thickness. 15 cm suits one person, 20 cm is the usual bed for a couple, and 25 cm or more gives extra comfort and suits heavier sleepers and hotels. Thin 1 to 5 cm sheets are for toppers and cushions.

3. Choose the foam. The foam class, certified by the Rwanda Standards Board, tells you its density. Class 17 (LD) is the lightest and lowest priced, class 20 (Galaxy) is good everyday value, and class 23 (Matelas Dodoma) is firmer and lasts longer. For back pain, Ortho-Medic gives very firm, even support.

4. Foam or springs. Foam is quiet, light and affordable. Pocket springs (Five Star) support each part of the body separately and keep one sleeper's movement from waking the other.

5. Look after it. Turn your mattress every three months and air it in the sun now and then. A washable cover, like Lala Salama's, keeps it fresh for longer.
